INTRODUCTION

Empowering Families Through Storytelling

LDS is a nonprofit dedicated to helping children, youth, and adults with learning differences reach their full potential. Despite its reputation as one of British Columbia’s top educational resources, the organization faced a challenge: it wasn’t connecting with the affluent families who could afford its services. This audience was critical—not just for sustainability, but for enabling LDS to extend its support to marginalized communities who couldn’t afford the same level of assistance.

While LDS excelled at providing life-changing educational support, it struggled to understand why these families weren’t engaging. That’s where Takt Studios stepped in. We were tasked with repositioning the organization, rethinking how it told its story, and producing a compelling campaign that would resonate with its intended audience. At the heart of this effort was a video—a story-driven piece centered around Joshua, a student whose journey exemplified the transformative impact of LDS.

A collage of school life moments: a child brushing teeth, students boarding a bus, kids in class, and parents using a computer—all capturing how children learn, develop, and succeed every day.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Building the Narrative from the Ground Up

A strong story isn’t just captured—it’s carefully built. Our first step was to uncover the right story to tell. It had to be authentic, emotionally resonant, and, most importantly, relatable to the families LDS wanted to reach. Working closely with the organization, we identified Joshua and his family as the perfect subjects. Their experiences encapsulated both the struggles and triumphs of children who learn differently.

Before stepping on set, we met with the family to establish trust. These early conversations allowed us to dig deeper, understanding their journey beyond what could be captured in a single interview. This process was crucial—it ensured the authenticity of the final piece, making the family feel comfortable enough to open up in a way that felt real and unscripted.

PRODUCTION

Capturing Emotion in Every Frame

When production began, we knew the key to making this video powerful wasn’t just in what was said, but in what was felt. The first day was dedicated to interviews—sitting down with Joshua’s parents, letting them tell their story in their own words. The highs and lows, the obstacles they faced, the moments of breakthrough. Emotion was at the forefront, and we let it unfold naturally on camera.

The second day was all about capturing the unspoken moments—the interactions, the quiet victories, the support system that made Joshua’s progress possible. But unpredictability is always part of the process. On the morning of the shoot, we learned that Joshua had sprained his ankle the day before. This meant a complete pivot in our approach. Shots that required him to be on his feet were reworked, and we adapted on the fly, shifting focus to moments of connection within his family rather than his individual movement. The result? A richer, more intimate piece that told the story with even greater depth.

POST-PRODUCTION

A Vision Brought to Life

Once filming wrapped, the next challenge was in the edit. Every second mattered. The pacing, the tone, the balance between interview footage and B-roll—all of it had to work together seamlessly. The music was carefully chosen to complement the emotion of the story, and audio mixing ensured that every spoken word carried weight. Color grading added the finishing touch, giving the piece a polished, cinematic quality that reinforced the depth of the story being told.

The final deliverables were designed for impact across multiple platforms, with a three-minute feature version as well as shorter cuts tailored for social media. Each edit preserved the heart of the story while adapting to different viewing behaviors, ensuring LDS’s message reached the right people, wherever they were watching.

CREATING OUTCOMES

Creating Real Connection

This project wasn’t just about producing a video. It was about shifting perceptions, breaking down barriers, and making sure LDS could continue its vital work. By capturing Joshua’s journey in a way that was both visually compelling and emotionally raw, we helped position LDS in front of the families who needed to see them most.

“When interviewing Josh’s parents, hearing the highs and lows of their journey was emotional, to say the least. Our team was truly able to capture the heart of their story and shed light on the developmental needs of children who learn differently.”
